Message in Flight is an activity where volunteers fold origami cranes and write short, encouraging messages or positive affirmations on the wings. These messages can be simple words of hope, kindness, or support meant to brighten someone’s day. Each crane represents a small act of care and positivity, reminding others that they’re not alone and that even small gestures can make a big difference.
How it works
You’ll help spread kindness and encouragement by folding origami cranes and writing uplifting messages or affirmations on their wings. Follow a basic crane tutorial and make sure each crane meets the requirements—small head, neat handwriting, and a properly folded body. When finished, ship your cranes to the foundation for review. This is a meaningful way to share hope while practicing creativity and care.
How we count hours
As a reminder, each of our programs tracks volunteer hours in its own unique way. For this program, here’s how hours will be counted:

-
Hour Calculation: 6 cranes per hour is the minimum but we encourage more than 6
-
Damaged/incomplete/inappropriate Cranes: 10 minute deduction per crane
-
Crane Requirements:
- small head
- legible handwriting
- positive and appropriate phrases used
- make sure each end of the crane is folded upward along its length, creating a small body below the wings that’s no wider than the width of your thumb
